The Colorado Climate Center, situated at the base of the eastern foothills to the Rocky Mountains, is part of the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. The Center has been monitoring Colorado's diverse and variable climate, conducting research, and providing climate data, information and expertise to the citizens of Colorado since 1974. Funding for the Center is through the Agricultural Experiment Station. The Colorado Climate Center has emphasized "observation" and "data collection" as foundational to climate monitoring, research and service. The Center is currently involved in snow measurement research in collaboration with the National Weather Service. The Center is also committed to citizen participation in climate monitoring. Through the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network (CoCoRaHS) thousands of citizens of all ages are helping measure and map precipitation patterns in Colorado and several other states.
