The Midwestern Regional Climate Center (MRCC), established in 1988, is located at the Illinois State Water Survey in Champaign, IL. The Water Survey, a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources until July 1, 2008, is now part of the Institute for Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois. The MRCC serves the nine-state Midwestern region with climate data, information, and applied research on climate-sensitive issues. Our center is a partner in a national climate service program that includes NCDC, the five other Regional Climate Centers, the State Climate Offices, and the National Weather Service. The mission of the MRCC is to monitor and assess climatic conditions and their impacts in the Midwest; disseminate high-quality climate data, data summaries, and climate information; prepare specialized historical climate data sets; and coordinate and conduct applied research on climate-related issues and problems. The services and research available from the MRCC help to better explain climate and its impacts on the Midwest, provide practical solutions to specific climate problems, and allow us to develop issues-based climate information for the Midwest. The Regional Climate Center program is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). |
